Alsace 02: Kenyan Quilts

I really enjoyed the Kenyan exhibit and particularly the 4 Salama Mamas work which is in aid of the school their children attend and produces an income too. Their quilts are based on the Siddi method working from the outside in a kind of reverse crazy quilting except pieces tend to be more regular.

Fabrics used include a lot of Kangas.

Anything will do by Carol Davey
Perhaps I could make one of these using Malaysian sarongs.

Alsace Post 01

The first day we gave our attention to two of the villages finishing up with shopping at the Expo. I was impressed by the range of traders. I have taken loads of photos so will post as and when. I tried to take at least one of every exhibit.

This was in the church at Liepvre and was in an exhibition of UK James Humtings' work.
The lines are embroidered over torn masking tape strips.

The view from here

This is the view from the loo of where we are staying in Kayserberg a very picturesque village in Alsace where five of us are gathered for the St Marie des Mines Show starting tomorrow though one of our number, Brigitte, has gone to a workshop with Bill Kerr today. Down below our three floors is the Air BnB owner's restaurant which serves the most delicious food, mostly local specialities though I had Magret de Canard, superb!
Before I left home I got projects to a certain stage, sewing my QST's together awaiting a border and arranging the leader ender 9-Patches I have been making. They've been walked on but now are all layered up into larger 4- patches which will all be pressed anti-clockwise so the blocks nest.

Wednesday was a Usual Suspects day when Tracy held up a colourful top.

Mavis's quilt

At Bonnies Mavis held up her version of this year's project all in consistent fabrics. It has been a good break from major undertakings with varied blocks and lots of piecing. Now we intend to take a break from making quilts for a time and focus on smaller project and technique afternoons. We had piles of cuttings and made a long list to choose from and add to as things occur to us. We're quite excited about it all only to find we are so booked up with holidays and different events that we can't meet till the end of October when we'll make a simple gift bag.
This month Siblings Together has started up again and I made three of the requested blocks now on their way to Ypilsanti USA. Next month it's my turn to request blocks and make a quilt from them.

Last Post for Quilters Guild Region Two Quilt Show

 For many years (27) Hever Castle and gardens has hosted the Quilters' Guild Region 2 Quilt show providing the marquee and quilt stands. Next year it will be discontinued but we will be able to keep the quilt stands. I helped set up and on Friday volunteered on the adult help desk and demonstrating and I managed to take pictures in just one section. I went back on Sunday with Alan and took more then.  A sad time but some super quilts and let's hope we find a new venue.

It was Mary's birthday and Maggie's daughter, Laura, Had made the MOST splendid cake. White chocolate fingers. Yummy! Look at the teacosy Maggie has made too.
