8. Sew into pairs..

5. If liked 2.5 inch squares with a diagonal line drawn across
can be added to the SAME corner of each square.

6. Sew along the line and press two towards the corners.
The underneath press two seams towards the square.

4. Arrange the squares to form a sort of cross or
windmill. You can sew the squares together
at this point to make a 12.5 inch unfinished
block.

Here is a version of Block 2b, I'm a bit cross with myself as I intended to place the corner squares on the grey fabric, not the yellow. The squares are optional and one of mine is not well sewn; it is fine to make a block without the centre pieces as this would be a traditional rail fence.
The pictures have a mind of their own but I have numbered them to indicate the order of sewing and cutting.


9. Completed block

1. Take three 2.5 inch wide strips and slong along the long edge.
Start the second seam from the opposite end to the first.


 

2. Straighten right hand end of your strip set.

3. Turn the board round and cut a 6.5 inch square measured from the left hand edge

Here are the block pieces laid out. The side pieces have been strip pieced from two contrasting
2 inch strips and the sewn unit measures 6.5 by 3.5" unfinished.
The centre square-in-a-square has been cut using a template which you need to draft by drawing a 6 inch
 square then marking the centre of each side and joining the dots. This is stuck onto card
and then a quarter inch added using your quilters' wheel..
The half square triangles  are drafted by drawing a 3 inch square and then drawing one diagonal line from
 corner to corner. Cut one out roughly and as before stick onto card and cut out
accurately on the line and then make a second template with seam allowances using a quilters' wheel.
Add triangles to opposite sides of your square-in-a-square, press and then
 add to the remaining two triangles and press. This sewn unit should measure 6.5 inches
unfinished.
 Sew pairs of contrasting triangles together to make the corner squares which should measure 3.5"
unfinished.

A completed block which should measure 12.5 inches but
don't worry if it doesn't as we can compensate for this later.

Sew the units together in rows and press towards the oblong units.

I was all packed for the quilt retreat today and arrived early afternoon whereupon time seemed stretch much than it does at home when all too soon it's time to make the tea or perform some other task.
We have all come with our own individual projects and half the fun is seeing these unfold. I am still working on my little log cabins.

About 14-16 members of Oast Quilters gathered to work on our own projects and enjpyed sewing together, seeing what others were doing and making good progress with out own work. There were several workshop projects to be completed, items for craft fairs and in my case chain piecing  6 inch log cabins for the final pieced border of my version of the Bonnie Quilters' frame quilt.

Quay Quilters

At our meeting last night members brought the paper pieced Hexagon shapes Trish had demonstrated the previous time. The beginners showed the blocks they had done, Di showed us how to make a Christmas swag and card holder and at show and tell Ann had been making beautiful boxes and Pauline some smily snails to bring joy to any gardener's heart.

but not put away and won't be for some time yet as we have promised to take our purchases to ooh and aah over with friends. I have brought back FQs as gifts and most of my purchases have a plan in mind, either for a New Look project or to add or complete things already in train.

Another one, none mine!

This is the set up for Charlotte Angotti's and Debbie Caffrey's "Surprise Yourself" Day; double classroom, 51 machines and tutors miked up. Laser cut pieces in the morning, just wonderful to sew and  in the afternoon we learned  how to cut your own using specialist tools. Batting was pinned all around the walls with demarcation lines ruled out and we took our piece home with us afterwards. Very professional and hugely entertaining. I'm on the table with the iron.
